EPISODE 141: Hope for Our World

Hi Everyone,

Here we go with more on hope: “Hope for our world.”

Do you think that the general state of the world is getting better or worse?
Someone recently asked this question of the Dalai Llama, the leader of the Tibetan Buddhist world. With his characteristic giggle and emphatic gusto,

His Holiness replied, “Better!!! Undoubtedly it is getting better.”

I’ll take this answer from a guy who lost his ancient homeland, witnessed the destruction of its temples and the torture of his friends, was personally chased by the Chinese who wanted him dead, and for over 60 years has been an emissary of peace and compassion to a wide variety of global situations.

In our intense times, it is really necessary for each of us to find our own personal “healthy hope habit,” and live it each day, all out!
For ourselves, and each other, and the human world as a whole.
Today’s podcast has a few ideas about how to do that – thanks for joining in.

Love,

EPISODE 141: Hope for Our World

“Keep it Simple,” the 12 Step Slogan goes.

In these uber-complex times, this may be the medicine for all of us. Like the philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who explored the principle of SIMPLICITY in his famous book, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods, we need to learn how to live deliberately, “to confront the essential facts of life, and learn what it has to teach.”

In fact, living simply is a noble goal, and a high state of living and understanding, though it means different things to every person.

How do we participate as engaged citizens, without being overwhelmed with the scope and variety of the problems that are afoot?

By doing our own tiny part, and realizing that sometimes a problem is solved and a solution is created from a level way beyond our rational ability to plan and implement it.

It’s important that we all hold the spirit of good will, and the best and highest intentions for humanity, and together create the fertile ground that will support the miraculous changes that we need. We need to keep the faith, collectively.

Let’s remember the simple things:
Live one day at a time.
Help who you are able to help, practically.
Do what is yours to do and love who is yours to love.

If we each tend our own little piece of the garden, with as much love, care, and realism as we can muster, then it’s a good day.

There’s a LOT of positive intention going in to our society.

If we can align with it, then something good will happen for us and everybody, again and again.

So, pass it on! Thanks for sharing our podcast with your people.

Peace, out!

EPISODE 139: The Serenity Prayer – It’s all there!

Hi Everyone,

We’re taking a dip into The New Kitchen Mystic again this week, in celebration of one of the most universal, user-friendly prayers on the planet:

The Serenity Prayer.

This prayer has long been the staple wisdom of every flavor of 12 Step program that there is, but I think it has so much to offer to any human being who wants to have a better day than you might otherwise be having.

So, if you weren’t fortunate enough to get all banged up and bottomed out on a terrible addiction of some kind and end up in a mandatory 12 Step meeting, this is your chance to belong to the club anyway.

The Serenity Club. You’re human, and it isn’t easy to be human for anyone, is it?

I invite you, our listeners, to join the Serenity Club, whenever things are feeling overwhelming or unpleasantly not within your control, and you are about to embark on being the worst version of yourself. Instead, put this complementary 12 Steps hat on, and say one of those sunny and simple slogans:

One day at a time. Keep it simple. Easy does it. Let go and let God. It works if you work it. The 12 Step way is simple – but not simplistic! – and sunny, and sustaining. And the Serenity Prayer guides us in relaxing into acceptance, and taking charge of what we can, and being able to know what’s what. Welcome to the club!

God, grant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

 Peace,
Mary & Erin

EPISODE 139: The Serenity Prayer – It’s all there!

Are you tense, anxious, and more wound up about your life situation than you should be? Are you having a “trying” time?

Stop trying, and instead… Sit right down. Breathe. Clear your mind, and whisper The Serenity Prayer.

God, grant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

The Serenity Prayer is a global prayer that contains everything; it’s where the wisdom of East and West meet.

It guides you to see clearly. Do I need to relax and accept something? Or do I need to seize the courage to change something?

Where is my “wisdom to know the difference?”

Sometimes, the magic medicine to improve your experience of your life situation is to do BOTH: see the good in what is, and accept it. AND make a solid movement with your will to make a change for the better.

How does one live “one day at a time?”
(Hint: you can ONLY manage one day at time; it is illusion to think that we can do any better than that!)

Enjoy the story of how Mary walked herself out of worry and chaos and into peace of mind by just thinking about this one day.

And what about this “letting go and letting God” concept? Erin shares an experience about that. (And nobody got frostbite.)

Enjoy your day! Just this one. It works if you work it.

EPISODE 138: WHAT’S IN A WORD? YOUR WORD OF THE YEAR

Hello friends,

We’re back! I hope you had a nice break in the holidays, and that you are still a little shiny and hopeful with that happy “re-set/re-boot/renew/resolve” energy that comes with the New Year.

In our first podcast of 2016, Erin and I have a conversation about a new twist on the old New Year’s resolution:

Your Word of the Year.

The word of the year is the one-word resolution that oh-so-simply empowers your growth for 2016. Based in an exercise from the teachings of Dr. Roberto Assagioli, this simple practice allows you to plant and develop a new character strength, and it will surprise you with its efficacy. Your word will “train” you in a new attitude, and open you up to a new way.

How do you pick your word of the year? How do you let it become the muse whispering to you over your shoulder?
Listen in, and Erin and I will offer some tips, and we will each share with you what our word for 2016 is.

Thanks for being with us, and inviting your friends to join in on the fun of listening to these conversations. In coming weeks, we will build on our New Year’s positivity with two shows on “Hope” – hope for ourselves and hope for our world, and a thoughtful exploration on the power of The Serenity Prayer.

All the best to you and yours for 2016 – onward!
Mary & Erin

EPISODE 138: WHAT’S IN A WORD? YOUR WORD OF THE YEAR

It’s the New Year! Such a great time for the re-start, the re-boot, the re-set … but how do you stick with it for the long term? Maybe you gave up making a New Year’s resolution a while ago because you always fail at sticking with it. (Doesn’t everyone? How is it that we can FORGET our best intentions so quickly?!)

Try this: boil your New Year resolution down into one word: your Word of the Year.

It’s the word that is the medicine for the chronic condition that ails you, and it lifts your eyes to the horizon, makes you breathe deeper, and enhances your sense of dignity as a student in life’s classroom.

Did you know that you can call in a new gift of character from the heart of the Universe, and from the amazing wellspring of your own soul? You can find a strength you’ve never had before. And you can begin to have new experiences of a fortunate life, despite a long history of disappointment.

Here’s some thoughts for you, from this show:

Spiritual surrender: “to take shelter within.” it means you accept and live inside the love and safety provided by your Higher Self.

“Our goals in life are merely the features on the game board of our life. What is of greater importance is the spirit with which we do or do not achieve our goals, and how we live our life, day by day.”

Our difficult growth processes can be softened, if we call for ease & grace, as we willingly engage all our challenges.
