Reasons to Learn Forgiveness
by Mary Hayes Grieco

There are many reasons to take the time to learn and live
the ways of Unconditional Love and Forgiveness.
Here are some of them:

    1. You are tired of suffering about something, and need to move on
    2. You want to reduce your stress and improve your health
    3. You want to be a better Christian. (Or Buddhist, or Yogi, or ....)
    4. You are in the Twelve Step Program of recovery from an addiction
    5. You are on a path of self mastery, and want to reach your potential and live purposefully
    6. You want to improve your family relationships
    7. You are a mental health professional and you want a reliable tool to help your clients release the pain of the past
    8. You want to contribute to world peace
    9. You want to create a more abundant life for yourself
    10. Joy! You just want to be happier, more of the time

Reason #5: You are on a path of self mastery, and you want to reach your potential and live purposefully. All human beings are a combination of light and shadow, limitations and greatness. But there is an upward trend in evolution that speaks to us individually and collectively, that whispers of a destiny inspired by the potential for greatness. We look to our leaders and heroes, and to the saints and masters, who hold out a mirror to us that says, You too, are more than the sum total of your background and your conditioning. You too have much to offer. Confront your fears! Cultivate your talents! Offer your truth! The light of God shines within you, as you. Just do it!

What does the practice of forgiveness have to do with the fulfillment of your life’s purpose? Quite a lot, actually. For one thing, forgiveness changes our personal story from the story of a victim of a series of unhappy events to the story of a master in training. When we forgive the handful of difficult things that have wounded us in our personal life story, we take a powerful step forward into the possibility of who we wish we could be, without the limitations of these scars. Each one of our personal tragedies will shift in our viewpoint from that of an oppressive lid on our power to a classroom of spiritual wisdom that we have successfully studied and graduated from with honors. Once the energy of sorrow and trauma has been digested and changed into compassion and wisdom, we are that much greater than before the wound occurred. Some of the best healers and teachers I have met are people with the worst personal stories. Their story was their training-ground, and the laboratory of understanding that became their greatest gift to others. In this way, self healing is intimately related to someone’s life purpose.

In another way of looking at it, we can say that forgiveness clears away the unnecessary brush and debris that is obscuring one’s natural gift, and obstructing your power. Real power is the unobstructed flow of Spirit through your own personality. It is the expression of your innate way of being and living. If your true sight is foggy and out of focus because of old messages and archaic belief systems from your childhood or family system, than you do not see and cannot be who you really are. Every single time you practice and experience forgiveness, you shed something false, and invoke something true. When you take the broom and sweep your heart of old garbage, you make room for the scintillating light of the soul to slide into that empty space, bringing with it new clarity, and new seeds of vision and purpose to plant and grow. As you open the channel between personality and soul, you kick on your creativity and your intuition increases, encouraging and guiding you in large and small ways to fulfill your purpose here. If you happen to be lumbering along in the darkness without a star to steer by, sometimes the surprising answer to the question, What do I do now? is the directive towards self healing. Forgive all that is burdening you and confusing you from what’s happened before now. Clean your house. Then you can seek your purpose anew. What are you waiting for?

Forgiveness: Do it for you.
